Public protests have increased since Wednesday, when an ICE agent opened fire and killed Renee Nicole Good. The death of this 37-year-old American citizen triggered a massive wave of anger and protests in the United States.
Renee Nicole Good was driving her vehicle when she was hit. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed the event was an “act of domestic terrorism” committed against ICE agents, and claimed the victim “tried to run them over and hit them with his vehicle.”
But Minnesota elected officials and many members of civil society counter that the tragedy was “unjustified.” Initial video taken by a witness shows the vehicle speeding away from the officers’ direction. Additionally, in a second video from the officer’s perspective revealed Friday, the victim is heard saying, “It’s okay, I’m not mad at you,” moments before turning his steering wheel and being shot.
The event, combined with a similar shooting in Portland, Oregon, where federal agents injured two people on Thursday, prompted U.S. coalitions and civil rights groups to organize more than 1,000 events called “ICE Out For Good” on Saturday and Sunday.
“We are all living in fear right now,” demonstrator Meghan Moore, a mother of two from Minneapolis, told AFP.
Some 2,000 ICE agents are present in the city of about 430,000 people. Under President Trump’s directive to deport up to millions of illegal immigrants from the United States, this is the “largest immigration operation” in the country, the Department of Homeland Security confirms.
ICE creates an environment where no one feels safe, and that is unacceptable.

“I see them harassing people almost every day,” said Connor Maloney, also to AFP. It’s just disgusting that this is happening in our community, around us. »
Rising tensions
On Saturday morning, three Democratic congressmen were denied access to ICE’s regional headquarters near Minneapolis – a sign of growing tensions between the Trump administration and its political opponents over ICE and its immigration actions.
Democrats deplore that local investigators were excluded from the investigations, led by the FBI. “Now is the time to follow the law…the fact that Pam Bondi’s Justice Department and this presidential administration have already reached conclusions on these facts is deeply concerning,” Minneapolis Democratic Mayor Jacob Frey said Saturday.

Mr. Frey also criticized “agitators who try to incite crowds” by causing property damage or endangering individuals. “That’s what Donald Trump wants. He wants us to take the bait,” he argued.
In the afternoon, a rare outburst observed on Saturday: ICE agents sprayed pepper spray towards a group of demonstrators, after they had thrown snow and ice at the police cars, and tried to block their passage.
“(Donald) Trump sent thousands of armed federal agents into our state, and it only took them a day to kill someone,” state Governor Tim Walz commented on social media on Saturday. “Now he wants nothing more than to see chaos distract from this horrific act.” Don’t give him what he wants. »
Anywhere in the United States
“Large crowds” were also observed in Philadelphia, New York and Washington, according to major American media. No major overflows have been reported.
In Philadelphia, participants chanted “ICE has got to go” and “No fascist USA.” In Manhattan, hundreds of people held up anti-ICE symbols. And in the capital, the protesters made themselves heard in front of the White House without being repressed.

In New York, student Leah Silverman was outraged at the speed with which the administration wanted to establish its own version of the facts about the death of Renee Nicole Good. For her, it is a “blatant murder in the middle of the street”, she told the New York Times.
Smaller demonstrations were held across the country. Some of them took place in Los Angeles, Portland, Sacramento, Boston and Denver, then others took place in Austin and San Antonio in Texas, North Carolina and Arizona, among others.
Since September, ICE agents have killed four people, in addition to injuring seven, according to the media The Tracewhich catalogs and investigates gun violence events in the United States.
