Minneapolis, Philadelphia, New York, Washington. Large-scale demonstrations took place in several Democratic strongholds on Saturday to denounce the methods of the immigration police (ICE) in the United States after the death of Renee Nicole Good, an American mother killed by the agency this week.

In Minneapolis, where the tragedy took place, tens of thousands of demonstrators braved the cold. Their signs carried slogans playing on words between the agency and ice, such as “De-ICE Minnesota!” » (ice melts in Minnesota) and “ICE melts in Minnesota”.

Public protests have increased since Wednesday, when an ICE agent opened fire and killed Renee Nicole Good. The death of this 37-year-old American citizen triggered a massive wave of anger and protests in the United States.

Renee Nicole Good was driving her vehicle when she was hit. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed the event was an “act of domestic terrorism” committed against ICE agents, and claimed the victim “tried to run them over and hit them with his vehicle.”

But Minnesota elected officials and many members of civil society counter that the tragedy was “unjustified.” Initial video taken by a witness shows the vehicle speeding away from the officers’ direction. Additionally, in a second video from the officer’s perspective revealed Friday, the victim is heard saying, “It’s okay, I’m not mad at you,” moments before turning his steering wheel and being shot.
