Cairo- Egypt has strengthened its location at the forefront of the globally exporting countries, which include oranges, lemon, mandarin and “Al -Ghribut”.

Despite the global challenges, the Egyptian government affirmed its leadership in exporting money in 2024 in quantities exceeding 2.4 million tons and revenues exceeding $ 1.1 billion, and its global superiority has been scored for years.

The Minister of Agriculture, Aladdin Farouk, attributed this position to the quality of production, the opening of new markets, the access to global markets, the commitment to international standards, and the support of exporters, which contributed to increasing agricultural exports.

The importance of citrus

Mawlis exports are highlighted as one of the most important pillars of Egyptian agricultural exports in 2024, as they acquired a large percentage of the total agricultural exports and value that achieved remarkable growth.

Agricultural exports topped with a quantity of about 2.4 million tons out of a total of 8.6 million tons (representing about 28% of the volume of agricultural exports). Al -Mawlid exports achieved revenues of $ 1.1 billion of total fresh and manufactured agricultural revenues of 10.6 billion dollars (representing about 10.4% of agricultural export revenues).

Causes of excellence

The Egyptian superiority is due to both the steady increase in production, as well as Egypt’s success in opening new export markets, according to the head of the agricultural services and follow -up sector at the Ministry of Agriculture, Ahmed Adam.

The official at the Ministry of Agriculture told Al -Jazeera Net that the increase in the production and export of citrus fruits is due to several factors, most notably the high area planted by about 500 thousand acres, and the introduction of new varieties for several years that meet the requirements of foreign markets, especially European.

With regard to the advantages of oranges and the rest of the coffee, a member made it clear that she has superior quality and competitive prices, in addition to the length of their storage period, thanks to adhering to international standards in all stages of production starting from agriculture, through harvesting and storage, to packaging.

The members of the private sector role in the export sector, and the efforts of the Agricultural Research Center of the Ministry of Agriculture in ensuring that production matching the standards, pointed out that more than 6 thousand farms are intended for export (equivalent to 420 thousand acres).

Oranges lead

Based on the statements of the US Department of Agriculture, Egypt has occupied the global lead center in the export of oranges since 2020.

Egypt is one of the largest producers and exporters of citrus in the world, especially oranges, as it topped its production globally in the marketing season 2024-2025.

The Head of the Agricultural Services and Follow -up Sector at the Ministry of Agriculture expected a future increase in production, and revealed a government trend to add added value to citrus through the establishment of factories for export centers.

Among the most important markets that Egypt managed to access, highlights the Japanese market, which requires procedures for ratification from the House of Representatives, which has already been achieved, and the official emphasized the strategic importance of opening more new markets.

The agricultural sector in Egypt

The agricultural sector in Egypt is a basic pillar of the national economy, as it contributes a large percentage to the gross domestic product and provides the largest number of job opportunities, especially in rural areas, according to reports issued by the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation.

It contributes to approximately 12% domestic product, which is the largest sectors to provide job opportunities. The percentage of agriculture workers of the total employees: about one -fifth (approximately 20%). The number of agriculture workers: about 5.4 million individuals. The Egyptian peasant captain, Hussein Abu Saddam, denied the existence of a relationship between the high volume of citrus exports, especially oranges, and the increase in their prices locally in the last season, specifically the significant increase in the prices of lemon, which exceeded the price of a kilo (about 120 pounds (about 2.5 dollars) compared to about 25 pounds (half dollars).

He stressed in an interview with (Al -Jazeera Net) that “local production of citrus in general is sufficient for the needs of the market, but the production of lemon specifically is the least among the types of citrus, and the high prices are affected by other factors such as increasing the costs of agriculture inputs and inflation rates.”

Abu Saddam pointed to Egypt’s success in opening new export markets and increasing the cultivated spaces, in addition to the increasing demand for Egyptian money in the Arab, Asian and European markets to Latin America, and considered that the government’s interest in the citrus sector contributed greatly to the leadership of Egyptian agricultural exports.

He explained that the state’s focus on export agriculture, the adoption of highly productive varieties, and the entry of new gardens under production (which takes nearly 3 years), in addition to the competitiveness of prices resulting from the low value of the pound, all of which were basic factors in paying exports towards rise.

The captain of the farmers said that the citrus sector “the mare betrayal” is in the state’s plan to expand the desert agricultural area, especially thanks to the bearing of citrus salinity and water scarcity.
