Hardly a home in Palestine is devoid of a prisoner or a freed prisoner from the Israeli occupation prisons. Since 1967, the occupation forces have arrested more than a million Palestinians, and 7,000 male and female prisoners remain behind their bars, including 559 sentenced to life imprisonment.

The strangeness of Israeli prisons does not stop at the families of children, of whom it arrests 500-700 every year, and about two hundred of whom remain behind its bars to this day, or administrative detention without charge or trial, under which about 2,070 prisoners are languishing; Rather, it goes beyond that to arresting the bodies and refusing to release them until the end of their “sentence” period!

One of the oddities of Israeli prisons is the issuance of prison sentences that exceed the normal human lifespan, by sentencing several prisoners to life sentences, such as the prisoner Marwan Barghouti, who was arrested in 2002 and sentenced to 5 life sentences and 40 years in prison, and the prisoner Ibrahim Hamed, who was arrested in 2006 and sentenced to life imprisonment 54 times!

As for the person who received the largest sentence in the history of the Israeli occupation, he is the prisoner Abdullah Barghouti, who was arrested in 2003 and sentenced to 67 life imprisonment, but this period seems short when compared to the completion of the sentence issued against him, as the Israeli court ruled that he was imprisoned for 5,200 years as well!

Therefore, the file of life sentencers was one of the most important files negotiated by the Palestinian resistance in the prisoner exchange deals it concluded with the Israeli occupation.

Regarding Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons, how they are treated and what they are exposed to, colleague Elia Gharbiyeh – from the AJ+ team – reviews recent numbers, important information and details about this pivotal issue.

Guilty without evidence.. They are arrested without a judicial order.. They are detained without charge or trial and are subjected to brutal treatment in prisons..
Astronomical sentences, collective punishments, and heavy fines are imposed on them and their families.
