The former star of Charmedwho accused Harvey Weinstein of sexually assaulting her in 1997, posted a video statement on Instagram after the New York appeals court ruled Thursday that the Hollywood producer did not receive a fair trial and overturned the verdict which condemned him.
“I am proud of how far we have come. Of everything we have awakened. What we know about ourselves is true. And what we know about others is true, she said. No matter what they decide, they can’t take away who we are, what we know, what we’ve been through, and what we can accomplish in this life.”
The actress then expressed her solidarity with her companions in misfortune and all those who “fight the good fight”.
“I am with you. Everything good in this universe is with you, encouraging us and pushing us to move forward, she continued. There are days when you get hurt more than others. But we will get back up. We can find small joys, no matter what.”
Rose McGowan encouraged those affected by the news to “shed those tears” and take a moment to pull themselves together. “We know the truth, we know who pulls the lever and who is behind the curtain. We know what we are and what they are. You are brave, she said. You are incredible. I’m proud of you and everything you’ve gone through and accomplished to get here.”
Harry Weinstein, 72, was sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York after being convicted of criminal sexual assault and rape in 2020. On Thursday, April 25, 2024, the New York Court of Appeals ruled in a 4-3 decision that the judge who presided over the producer’s trial prejudiced him by allowing three women to testify about their alleged meetings with the movie mogul even though their accusations did not form the basis of the case and the facts were prescribed.
Actress Mira Sorvino, who accused Harry Weinstein, also reacted on X/Twitter, writing: “Since when have courts not allowed evidence of prior wrongdoing to be admitted? He is a prolific serial predator who has raped and injured over 200 women! Disgusted by the justice system which leans towards predators and not victims.”
The producer was not released from prison, as he was sentenced to sixteen years in prison following another trial for sexual assault and rape in Los Angeles. Harry Weinstein always insisted that all of his sexual encounters were consensual.
