A Virginia couple allegedly adopted black children, before making them slaves who slept in a barn.
Donald Ray Lantz, 63, and Jeanne Kay Whitefeather, 62, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a dozen new charges, according to “MetroNews.” They were first arrested last October.
The police found several children in a ruined shed with shabby clothes in Sissonville. The children were aged 16, 11, 9 and 6 years old.
According to Kanawha County Judge Maryclaire Akers, these charges are unheard of in her career. It is alleged that the adopted children were forced to work on the couple’s farmland because of their race.
“The indictment alleges human trafficking, human rights violations and the use of forced labor,” she said. (…) These children would have been targeted because of their race and they would have been used essentially as slaves.
