Mark Robert, a former engineer of NASA and the owner of a famous YouTube channel, conducted 6 self -driving car tests, to compare two types of electric cars with different driving systems.
The first car is the Tesla car with the Autopilot automatic driving system, which relies on simple cameras instead of expensive technology, and the second car was not shown by the video but it was a “Lexus” type of “Lidar” that uses laser technology to draw a 3D map of the ocean and contains sensors to detect light and range.
Robert claimed that he conducted these tests to find out if he could deceive the self -driving system in Tesla, which relies on simple cameras, not advanced technology, and to explain the capabilities of the “Leader” system that he talked a lot in the video, and began his tests from the easiest to the most difficult starting from the “Lyder” system.
Simple collision test
The first test was the “simple collision test”, where a doll was placed in the shape of a child in the middle of the road, to find out any distance that will stop a 60 -kilometer car per hour.
The car that works with the “Lider” system stopped 18 meters before the child depending on the technique of “self -braking”, according to Rober, and the Tesla car, it was tested in two phases, when walking at the same speed, the Tesla car managed to identify the doll, but it did not stop at the appropriate time, which led to its collision with the child, and this is due to the way the “self -braking” system in Tesla cars.
The second stage was with the operation of the autonomous driving system “Autopilot” and the result was normal and the car stopped at the appropriate time, and since the ruling is Robe, he considered that the two cars successfully passed the first test.
Robert believes that the failure of the Tesla car in the first stage and its success in the second stage is due to the design of the car, because in the regular driving mode the driver is always attentive to the road and uses the brakes only when ensuring that there is a problem, and it does not depend on the self -braking system to avoid the wrong warnings that hinder driving and cause sudden unnecessary stops. Thus, the two cars succeed in the first test.
Surprise component test
The second test simulated a child’s rush behind a parked car, giving the self -driving system less than a second to determine the child’s place and stop, and the two cars were able to pass the test without errors and close results.
Fog test
The third test was more enthusiastic, which is a “fog test”, as Robe used some equipment that mimics the conditions of fog with a doll for a child in the middle of the road, and the challenge was to detect the child in the fog.
As for the car, which is running the Laser “Leader” system, it was able to identify the body within the fog and stopped automatically without a collision.
But for the Tesla car, it was not able to see the doll in the fog and did not stop until after the child was shocked by a distance.
Rain test
The fourth test was the “rain test” to see. Can cars determine the child in very rainy conditions, and at the beginning the child was evident on the road for both cars, but once the water began with the height the child disappeared from the two cars radar – and here the experiment begins.
The first car did not slow down when I approached the pill, but at one time I realized a body behind the water and stopped immediately, but the Tesla car took the same decision in the “fog test” and ran over the doll, which is the second failed test of Tasla.
Bred test
The fifth test was a “brightness test”, by directing 6 high bright lights that mimic the sunrise or sunset, or even a truck with bright lights, and know whether these lights will prevent the child’s vision by cars?
The two cars were able to pass this test as it was able to see the child and stand before a collision, but the only loser in the test was Robe because he was unable to see the child himself because of the intensity of the lighting.
“Rod Renner” test
The sixth and last test is the most important test for Robert, and the creation of a wall has a straight path that mimics a scene in the “Road Runner” children’s program.
And for the complete test the Robe placing a doll in the shape of a child behind the wall to find out whether the car will distinguish the wall, or it will consider it a complement to the road that is going on.
For human beings, this trick can be easily discovered due to the edges of the wall and small insight contrasts, but self -driving cars do not think like us, and for the first car it managed to distinguish the image printed on the wall thanks to the “Lider” system and thus the car stopped without colliding with it.
As for Tesla, it failed to test and shocked the wall without any touch of the brake, and this shows that the cameras system in Tesla is unable to distinguish the fake road and will continue to walk.
Tesla supporters reaction
Tesla supporters were not satisfied with the Robert’s video and considered it a soft advertisement for the technique of “Lider” more than a real test, and it is not surprising that this system is not present in Tesla cars because of its high cost and his need to process more data, and Elon Musk criticized the CEO of Tesla this system to the extent that he was described as a “foolish task”.
Tesla supporters believe that the tests are unrealistic, you will not find a child in the middle of the road at sunrise or if he is in front of a truck with a very bright light, and the ridiculous matter is that it will be shocked even before the Tesla car arrives at him.
It is very unlikely to meet a speeding Tesla car with a child in the midst of fog or under the rain of Uzair in an empty place, and the last test is the closest to the impossible. It is funny.
In any case, the video was very enjoyable due to the efforts made by Robert, but this video was about Tesla supporters into conspiracies who believe that the large “Leader” bought Robert to promote it, and that it is trying to discredit Tesla.
Tesla share decreases 5% after Robe video
Tesla’s share decreased by 5%, which is a weak performance compared to the wider market gains, which amounted to 0.6% after the Robe video, and in return, the share of the company “Luminar Technologies”, a leading company in the manufacture of “Leader” technology by 27.5%.
The video raised the concerns of many, while Tesla is preparing to launch the “Robotaxi” service by next June, and with Tesla’s shares decreased by 38% since the beginning of the year, the video of Rubi increased the clay and pressed the giant of electric cars.
Investors are increasingly auditing in Tesla’s dependence on camera -based self -driving technology instead of “Leader” technology, which many experts believe provides a superior statement in difficult circumstances, and this may affect Tesla’s credibility and thus its shares.
