Passengers on a United Airlines flight to Seattle suffered the scare of their lives when one of the plane’s engines caught fire during takeoff at the Chicago airport Monday around 2 p.m.
Dramatic footage captured inside the plane shows black smoke enveloping one of the aircraft’s wings.
According to the author of the video, an explosion sound was heard inside the Airbus 320 aircraft.
“I felt the impact against the window. When I looked outside, I saw fire and smoke coming out of the engine,” Ivan Paloalto told Storyful.
The incident led to the evacuation of 148 passengers and 5 crew members.
US authorities paused arrivals at Chicago airport during one of the busiest weekends of the year. Operations resumed around 2:45 p.m.
No one was injured during the event. The passengers left the plane “normally,” according to the airline.
“We are working hard to offer alternatives to our customers,” United Airlines said.
