The US Department of Justice reported that Hino Motors (truck unit), a subsidiary of Toyota, will pay $1.6 billion in the United States, due to providing false data regarding emissions from diesel engines of trucks sold in the country.
The US Department of Justice said that false information regarding emissions and consumption tests led to the sale of more than 110,000 diesel engines with illegally obtained approvals in the United States between 2010 and 2022.
“Today, Hino Motors, a subsidiary of Toyota, agreed to plead guilty to engaging in a criminal conspiracy to mislead regulators and consumers, which violated federal environmental laws and endangered public health,” US Attorney Merrick Garland said in a statement.
“No company is above the law, and I am grateful to our federal and state partners for their work to hold Hino accountable for its criminal misconduct.”
