Volkswagen employees in the US state of Tennessee voted by a large majority to form a union, according to results released by the automaker on Friday.
Employees at the Chattanooga plant voted 73% to be represented by the UAW (United Auto Workers) automobile union, according to results communicated by Volkswagen. Until now, the union had not managed to establish itself in any of the non-American manufacturers, the vast majority of whom have taken up residence in the southern states of the United States.
“Volkswagen workers have just made history!” the UAW said in a message published in X.
After successful negotiations among the three American giants of the sector, the powerful automobile union wants to extend to foreign manufacturers present in the United States.
In addition to Volkswagen, the UAW has filed a request to hold a vote at the Mercedes-Benz site in Vance, Alabama, which will take place from May 13 to 17, the Office of Enforcement announced this week of Labor Law (NLRB).
