Several zebras and camels were rescued from the flames on Saturday morning in Indiana, United States, after the trailer transporting them caught fire.
The fire started around 2 a.m. Saturday while the vehicle the Shrine Circus animals were in was on Highway 69, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office. In total, five zebras, four camels and a miniature horse were rescued.
“Not only did our first responders rescue them quickly, but they also did their best to keep the animals calm,” the police force said in one of its numerous Facebook publications on the event.
Fortunately, neither the trailer driver nor the animals were injured in the fire. For their part, the two police officers who intervened to free the trapped animals suffered smoke inhalation and were quickly treated at hospital for this.
“Additional officers on scene were able to secure all animals until additional Shrine Circus trucks arrived,” the sheriff’s office added in a statement.
