Vice-President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited the members of the National Guard in Washington on Wednesday despite the presence of demonstrators.

Posted at 5.11 p.m.

The protesters chanted “release Washington” in response to the repression led by President Donald Trump in the capital.

Mr. Vance thanked the members of the National Guard and declared that they had restored “public order” in the city.

The number of soldiers deployed was estimated at 1900, mostly from states led by Republicans.

Earlier, an armored vehicle collided with a civil car near the Capitol, injuring a person.
