Yesterday, Thursday, the city of Tororo in eastern Uganda witnessed a foundation stone laying ceremony for the eastern railway line project linking to Kenya, which will be implemented by the Turkish company “Yapi Marki”.
In a speech during the ceremony, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni confirmed that the project will contribute to alleviating traffic congestion in Uganda.
Museveni added that the project will also contribute to reviving trade activity.
For his part, Turkish Ambassador Mehmet Fatih Ak expressed his confidence that Yapi Markazi Company will succeed in completing the project on schedule.
On October 14, the Ugandan government signed an agreement worth about $3 billion with the Turkish construction company Yapi Merkez to implement the eastern railway project.
The project will start from the Ugandan capital, Kampala, and extend to Kenya, which means it will connect Uganda to the port of Mombasa overlooking the Indian Ocean in Kenya.
The length of the railway will be 273 km, and construction work is scheduled to take 48 months.
