(Brooklyn Park) Two elected officials from Minnesota were affected by a shooter at their home early on Saturday, said a state mayor.
The mayor of Champlin, Ryan Sabas, said that senator John Hoffman and representative Melissa Hortman were targeted, and that Mr. Hoffman’s wife was also affected.
One person who said the case told the Associated Press that investigators think that the suspect may pretend to be a police officer. This person added that the investigators always tried to establish the mobile of the attacks and that the investigation was only in its infancy.
State governor Tim Walz said the attack was targeted.
Mr. Hoffman, a Democrat, was elected for the first time in 2012. He headed the consulting company Hoffman Strategic Advisors. He previously held the position of vice-president of the Anoka Hennepin School Board, which manages the largest school district in Minnesota. Mr. Hoffman is married and father of a daughter.
Mme Hortman is the first democratic leader of the House of Representatives of the State Legislative Assembly and a former president of the Chamber. She was elected for the first time in 2004. Mme Hortman, lawyer, is married and mother of two children.
Hoffman and Hortman both represent districts located north of Minneapolis.
