Syrian tweeters on social media welcomed the US Treasury Department’s issuance of a license to expand permitted activities and transactions with Syria for a period of 6 months.

According to what was reported in the episode (1/7/2025) of the “Shabakat” program, under the American license, it became possible to deal with Syrian government institutions on a limited basis, with the exception of military or intelligence institutions or people associated with them, and countries and companies could now sell energy to the Syrian government, Oil and electricity will be supplied or donated to Syria, but it will not be able to open new investments.

The license allows sending personal remittances only to Syria, including through the Central Bank, but it does not lift the ban on the property or funds of any banned person, such as the ousted President Bashar al-Assad and his partners.

The step will help pay the salaries of employees in government institutions, facilitate basic services, and continue government functions.

The United States had imposed direct economic sanctions on the ousted regime through the “Caesar Act” and the “Captagon” Acts 1 and 2, but “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham” is included in the sanctions due to its classification as a “terrorist organization.”

On social media, Syrians rejoiced at the license issued by the US Treasury Department, and considered the step a breakthrough on the horizon for the Syrian economy. The episode of “Shabakat” showed some comments.

Ibrahim Al-Badawi commented on the issue, saying, “This is a very important step. On the other hand, the current authority must take a corresponding step towards this. We want to see the real start of building the state.”

Venus Muhammad said, “The Syrian economic reality must now be dealt with more seriously, taking into account that without lifting these sanctions, Syria will not witness any future economic projects, reconstruction will not take place, and new cooperative economic agreements will not be signed.”

Mahmoud Tabak wrote, “Lifting sanctions means, for those who do not know: activating foreign transfers to Syria officially and through the Central Bank, which means an influx of money, and allowing companies to deal with government institutions, which facilitates the process of restoring services… and opening ports and airports to exports means an influx of products.” And raw materials.”

Muhammad’s comment stated, “In the past, aid was stolen and sold by the regime. Now aid is given directly to the people. Therefore, any attempt now to continue sanctions is a direct targeting of the Syrian people, because there is no one who steals and sells aid and benefits from it to finance his army.”
