On the one hand, omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that effectively reduces excessacidacid gastric. However, its long-term use has been associated with an increased risk of fractures and infections, and deficienciesdeficiencies in micronutrients.
On the other hand, turmeric is a culinary spice whose active ingredientactive ingredient (curcumin) is recognized for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. To find out whether it could replace omeprazole in the treatment of functional dyspepsia, researchers found 151 Thai patients aged 18 to 70 suffering from recurrent stomach aches. They formed three treatment groups: turmeric alone (two capsulescapsules 250 mg of curcumin four times a day and one capsule placeboplacebo), omeprazole alone (one 20 mg capsule per day and two placebo capsules four times per day), and turmeric in addition to omeprazole.
Patients in all groups noted significant improvement in their symptoms after 28 days, and even more so after 56 days. Despite the small size of the study and the short intervention period, the researchers are satisfied with the results found on curcumin. “ No serious side effects have been reported, although liver function tests have indicated some level of deterioration in overweight curcumin users. », They note in a press release.
