The Washington Post reported today, Saturday, from informed sources as saying that US President Donald Trump urges his senior advisers to take a more assertive position on customs duties in light of the administration’s willingness to escalate its global trade war.
Despite Trump’s allies in Wall Street and Congress to adopt a more moderate approach, the newspaper report said that Trump is heading to take comprehensive trade measures aimed at reshaping the American economy.
The newspaper report stated that Trump continues to tell his advisers that he wants to continue to increase commercial measures, and in the past few days he re -proposed the idea of imposing comprehensive customs duties applied to most imports, regardless of the source country.
The newspaper reported that Trump expressed his remorse for not applying wider customs duties during his first term, blamed his advisers for persuading him to decline, adding that it has not yet become clear how seriously looking at the idea of comprehensive customs duties.
According to the newspaper, the president told his consultants that customs duties represent a gain for the United States, as it will lead to the return of jobs in the manufacturing sector and add trillion dollars to government revenues.
Trump said on Friday that he was open to concluding deals with countries that seek to avoid American customs duties, but he will have to negotiate these agreements after his administration announced the counter -tarius on April 2.
Trump said on Wednesday that the United States will impose customs duties by 25% on auto imports, and directed a threat to the European Union and Canada to impose wider customs duties than before, if the two agreed to cause economic damage in the United States.
