US President Donald Trump announced the suspension of the additional customs duties imposed by his country on Canada for a period of 30 days, after taking a similar decision on Mexico.
He said in a post on the “Truth Social” platform, yesterday, Monday – that the comment decision came after a phone call he had with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Trump added that Canada will enhance coordination with the American side and “agreed to ensure the security of our northern borders and stop the flow of fatal drugs, such as fentanel, to us.”
The US President stated that Canada will implement a $ 1.3 billion plan to enhance border security, with new helicopters, advanced technologies and additional cadres.
He also pointed out that Trudeau made new obligations, including the appointment of an official in charge of combating “fentanel” and the “carton” classification (smuggling gangs) terrorist.
Added to this is the guarantee of border monitoring around the clock throughout the week, and the launch of a joint striking force between Canada and the United States to combat organized crime and “fentanel” and money laundering.
Trump also reported the signing of Canadian Prime Minister, a new intelligence direction on organized crime and “Fntanil”, supported by $ 200 million.
“I am very satisfied with this initial result, and the customs duties announced on Saturday will be suspended for 30 days to see if a final economic agreement will be reached with Canada.”
In turn, Trudeau said that he had held “good” telephone talks with Trump, stressing that Canada will implement the border security plan of $ 1.3 billion.
He stressed – in a post on the X platform – the suspension of the additional customs duties imposed by Washington on his country, for a period of “at least 30 days.”
In early February, Trump signed an executive order to impose additional customs duties by 25% on the goods imported from Canada and Mexico, and 10% on imports from China.
The Canadian County of Ontario is declining
Meanwhile, the province of Ontario – the beating economic heart of Canada – yesterday, a decision made by the same day prevented American companies from obtaining contracts with government institutions, after Washington’s suspension imposed customs duties on Canadian imports.
“We temporarily avoided customs duties that would have caused serious harm to our economy, and this gives us time to negotiations and to calm the nerves,” said Doug Ford Prime Minister Doug Ford.
He added that “after the United States was suspended imposing customs duties, Ontario will also suspend their reprisals.”
Ford announced yesterday morning that the American companies will prevent from its history from obtaining contracts with any governmental institution in the boycott, which will make these companies “lose tens of billion dollars from new revenues.”
After Washington’s comment imposed these fees for 30 days, Ford said, “Do not make mistakes. Canada and Ontario are still facing the threat of customs duties. We are now feeling their impact.”
He added, “As long as our commercial relations with the largest commercial partner are still unconfirmed, we will continue to see many possible projects frozen and projects under implementation are at risk.”
Comment on Mexico
The US President announced the suspension of the customs duties imposed on Mexico for a month starting from February 4, in exchange for strengthening border security.
He also stressed his “Truth Suosal” platform yesterday, suspending the imposition of 25% fees on Mexican imports “immediately” would have come into effect today.
The US President said that he had “a very friendly conversation with Mexican President Claudia Shinbom” and explained that during the period of one month’s comment, negotiations will be held with the aim of reaching an “agreement” with Mexico.
“During the freezing of customs duties, we will hold negotiations chaired by 3 US ministers and high -level Mexican officials,” he added.
For its part, the Mexican president confirmed that the United States has agreed to freeze customs duties for a month.
During a press conference in the capital, Mexico City, Shinbom said she suggested to Trump during a telephone conversation freezing the customs duties that Washington intended to impose tomorrow on her country, and agreed to comment for a month, even discussing the matter extensively between the two parties.
She added that the Mexican and American teams will start today to work on the fields of security and trade, noting that Mexico will deploy 10,000 national guard soldiers on the border immediately to prevent drug smuggling to the United States.
“We agreed that the United States will abide by working to prevent smuggling of high ammunition weapons to Mexico,” she said.
Chinese response and European warning
China said today that it will impose 15% customs duties on its imports of coal and liquefied natural gas from the United States, after the latter imposed 10% on Chinese goods.
The Chinese Ministry of Finance also announced today that it will impose customs duties by 10% on its imports of crude oil, agricultural machines, large vehicles and small trucks from the United States.
Beijing explained that the new customs duties is a response to “increasing the unilateral customs duties” announced by the United States during the weekend.
Trump’s decisions have sparked similar moves in Europe, and European Commission President Ursula von der Line confirmed that the European Union will resolve “firmly” on the United States if the Trump administration imposes additional customs duties on its country.
Deir Line – a unofficial summit for the leaders of the Federation in the Belgian capital yesterday – said that the union is ready for a “strong and constructive” dialogue with the United States, but at the same time realizes the potential challenges in relations with Washington and ready for it.
