Donald Trump “certainly supported an insurrection, there is no doubt about it, none,” US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday in reaction to a spectacular decision the day before by the Colorado Supreme Court.
The 81-year-old Democrat, however, indicated that he was not “commenting” on the court decision itself, after this court declared his predecessor ineligible for the presidency because of his actions during the assault on the Capitol.
“I let the court decide whether the 14e amendment of the Constitution applies,” he said upon his arrival in Milwaukee (Wisconsin, north-central), where he is traveling for the day.
The Colorado Supreme Court concluded that Donald Trump “engaged in rebellion on January 6, 2021” during the assault on the Capitol, and considered that the 14e amendment of the Constitution, invoked to claim his ineligibility, did indeed apply to a president.
The judges therefore asked the electoral authorities of this western state to remove the name of Donald Trump from the ballots for the Republican primaries in 2024, of which he is the big favorite.
The former Republican president “certainly supported an insurrection, there is no doubt about it, none. Zero. And he gives the impression of driving the point home again,” said Joe Biden, himself a candidate for a second term.
The American president is campaigning largely on the “threat” that he believes Donald Trump represents for American democracy.
The decision of the Supreme Court of Colorado, a state which largely voted in favor of Joe Biden in 2020, aroused almost unanimous indignation from the Republican party.
All eyes are now on the Supreme Court of the United States, before which the former Republican president will appeal.
