A Republican candidate in North Carolina, one of the most contested states in the US presidential election, ruled out withdrawing on Thursday after CNN revealed controversial messages about Nazism or slavery, published on a pornographic website in the 2010s.

Mark Robinson, who is aiming to become the first black governor of the southeastern state with the support of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, has categorically denied being the author of the pseudonymous messages broadcast by CNN.

In a video message, he denounced “salacious tabloid lies.” “We are still in the race,” he assured.

The Republican, the state’s vice governor, had already sparked controversy with his comments denying the Holocaust, praising Hitler and vilifying Martin Luther King.

The author of the messages, published between 2008 and 2012, CNN specifies, claimed in 2010 to be a “black Nazi” and spoke out in favor of the reestablishment of slavery.

Asked about CNN’s claims, a spokeswoman for Donald Trump’s campaign, Karoline Leavitt, simply responded that the former president was certain to win in North Carolina against his opponent, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
