(Washington) Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he would bring together the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan on Thursday for the signing of a “historic” peace agreement, between these two ex-Soviet republics engaged for decades in a territorial conflict.
“Many leaders have tried to end the war, until now, until now, thanks to” Trump “,” said the American president on his Truth Social network on Thursday evening.
He said that a “peace signature ceremony” would be organized during this “historic summit” with the participation of President Azerbaijani Ilham Aliev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pachinian.
The American president will first welcome the two leaders in a separate manner, and will each sign a bilateral agreement between the United States and their country, before the signing at 4:15 p.m. (Eastern time) of the tripartite agreement.
According to the CBS channel, the text gives in the United States the development rights of a corridor of 43 kilometers in Armenian territory, which will be called “Trump path for international peace and prosperity” or tripp.
The White House did not answer AFP questions on this information.
Erevan confirmed that the Armenian Prime Minister would have an interview with the American president “in order to strengthen the strategic partnership between Armenia and the United States”, and added that a “tripartite meeting (…) with Donald Trump and the Azerbaijani president (would also have been to contribute to peace, development and economic cooperation in the region”.
The last meeting between Nikol Pachinian and Ilham Aliev, on July 10 in Abu Dabi, resulted in any tangible progress with a view to a finalization of the peace agreement on which the two states of the Caucasus had nevertheless agreed in March after very long negotiations.
Before any signature, Azerbaijan presented a list of requirements to Armenia, including the addition of amendments to the Armenian Constitution including the abandonment of any territorial claim on the contested region of Karabakh.
The two countries clashed during two wars for control of this mountainous territory, which Azerbaijan finally took over from Armenian separatists during a flash offensive in 2023.
“It is more than time that Donald Trump receives the Nobel Peace Prize,” said his spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt on July 31 during his routine press briefing, arousing half-ironic reactions from opponents of the Republican leader.
She considered that, since his return to power on January 20, the American president had presided over the conclusion “of a cease-fire or peace agreement per month”, giving examples his mediations between India and Pakistan, Cambodia and Thailand, Egypt and Ethiopia, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Serbia and Kosovo …
The list of candidates is not made public by the Norwegian committee which awards the distinction, but Israel, Cambodia and Pakistan have recently announced that they have appointed Donald Trump.
