A 2-year-old child was killed and his mother seriously injured Wednesday after a tree fell on their home due to a tornado that struck Michigan.
“This is a terrible tragedy for our community,” said Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan, who offered her condolences to the victim’s family, the “New York Post” reported Thursday.
On Wednesday, a strong tornado that swept through several areas of Michigan uprooted a large tree which fell on the roof of the residence where the victim and his mother were enjoying a short afternoon nap in the city of Livonia .
It took more than 2 hours of work for rescue teams and firefighters to free the mother and her child, while neighbors rushed to help despite the force of the winds, according to the New York newspaper.
The child’s mother was taken to hospital in critical condition, while another two-week-old baby who was sleeping with his grandmother in another room of the house was not injured.
The tornado which took authorities and citizens by surprise caused significant damage and power outages to more than 30,000 homes and businesses, continued the American media.
