Thieves stole a 200-foot radio tower and transmitter from an Alabama AM radio station, preventing it from going on the air on Friday, February 2.
WJLX station general manager Brett Elmore was informed of the situation by an employee cleaning the property, CNN reports.
All the equipment present on the premises was stolen and the electrical wires which connected the radio tower were torn out.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Elmore deplores the situation.
“I’ve heard stories of thieves who steal anything, but this one stands out,” he wrote. Not only was my building vandalized, but my 200-foot tower is no longer there!”
Jasper County Police have opened an investigation into the theft.
“I hope they find out who did this,” he continues. It is a federal crime to harm a federally licensed venue.”
The tower in question had been in place since 1950.
How the thieves were able to escape with the tower remains a mystery for now.
The radio station is now seeking permission from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to be able to use FM airwaves temporarily.
