Technology and increased use
The Economic Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture indicated that technological progress contributes to increasing the per capita consumption of fresh carrots, demonstrating this with a graph showing the increase in per capita American consumption of fresh carrots during the years between 1919-2022.
The graph shows that in 1919, per capita consumption of fresh carrots in the United States was two pounds, but this has increased to 8.8 pounds in 2022.
The US Research Service said: “Over the last 35 years in particular, the US carrot industry has witnessed a transformation thanks to fresh crop technology (the ability to store fresh food products and use them when needed).”
History of the islands
The British Carrot website, which specializes in carrots, stated that the origin of carrots dates back to Afghanistan sometime in the seventh century AD, where its fruits were purple in color.
The report continued that carrots were also known to the Greeks under the name (Feltron) and they used it as a medicine to increase activity.
The British website noted that carrots were linked to stories in Roman civilization, where it was said that Emperor Caligula was forcing the so-called Roman Senate at the time to eat carrots until they sacrificed themselves like “wild beasts.”
The report indicated that carrots began to be used as a food crop in India, China, and Japan by the thirteenth century. However, the funny thing is that carrots grow in summer and winter, but the starches turn into sugar in the winter to withstand the extreme cold, which makes their fruits taste sweet in this season.
In Europe, carrots did not gain much fame until the Middle Ages, as doctors used to prescribe them as a cure for everything, including sexual diseases and snake bites.
British Carrot reported that the orange color of carrots may have appeared in the Netherlands in the sixteenth century, where the original red, purple, black, yellow and white varieties were hybridized to the common bright orange color, which is associated with a high concentration of beta-carotene.
Carrots moved to England during the so-called (Elizabethan Era), where some people ate their roots, while others used their feathery stems to decorate their hair, hats, and clothes.
Carrots are a versatile crop that can be eaten raw or cooked, and are an integral part of many meals around the world, making carrot cake, which the United States is famous for.
Indians use carrots to prepare a popular dessert called (halva), and in the French city of Vichy, carrots were on the menus of many hotels as part of a treatment to relieve digestive pain.
Islands and sight…fact or fiction?
Scientific American analyzed the widespread belief that carrots improve vision and whether this is true or just an illusion.
He added: “The answer is yes. The body uses beta-carotene available in carrots to produce vitamin A, which helps the eye convert light into a signal that can be transmitted to the brain, which increases the ability to see in dim light.”
He continued: “Every year, a number of 250-500 thousand children lose their sight due to vitamin A deficiency, and in places characterized by severe vitamin A deficiency, such as Nepal and India, this is compensated for with supplements containing beta-carotene to improve the ability to see at night.
Stick and carrot
Many may not imagine that the donkey was the first inspiration for the concept of “carrot and stick,” which is now used in the world of politics, economics, and elsewhere as a means of deterrence or enticement.
The Voice of America website stated that some historians believe that this principle came as a result of an ancient custom of urging the donkey to move forward by dangling a carrot in front of it or hitting it with a stick if it refuses to obey.
US President-elect Donald Trump is famous for using the carrot and stick policy in dealing with foreign files in his relationship with Russia, China, and immigration policy.
It is noteworthy that Trump takes a tough stance (the stick) towards China, while he has close relations (the carrot) with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
