The story of the fateful night and the wealthy family has received significant attention since the series’ release Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Storyin September, and new evidence has surfaced.

The brothers could benefit from a new trial or a revised sentence, where Lyle and Erik could be free men. Their charges could be upgraded from first-degree murder to self-defense manslaughter, including sexual abuse by the father, which was proven in letters sent to family members well before the killings.

For now, the individual assigned to their case, George Gascón, says his team is divided on the issue. Some of the decision-makers would permanently keep both men behind bars, while others believe that Lyle and Erik deserve their freedom for enduring the sexual violence they experienced.

Celebrity and legal practitioner Kim Kardashian also met with the brothers in prison to further their cause.

*Update*: George Gascón indicates Thursday, October 24 at the end of the day, at a press conference, that “a new sentence is appropriate” for the Menendez brothers. the sentence of life without the possibility of parole could therefore be lifted.
