Israeli military spending increased 65% in 2024 to 46.5 billion dollars, due to the war on Gaza and its repercussions, to be this largest war cost since the six -day war in 1967 in Egypt, Syria and Jordan.

According to the report of the Stockholm International Institute for the annual peace research on military spending for each country, which the Israeli Economic Newspaper conveyed to Israel, “Military spending in the Middle East will reach an estimated $ 243 billion in 2024, an increase of 15% over 2023, and 19% over 2015. In December 2024 alone, Israeli military spending reached $ 5.7 billion.

Over the course of the contract ending at the end of 2024, Israeli military spending increased by 135%, raising the 14th place in the world in terms of the size of the defense budget in 2023 to 12th in 2024, crossing Poland and Italy.

The Globes newspaper indicated last November that Israel is ranked second in the world in terms of military spending as a percentage of GDP, after Ukraine, and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute estimates this percentage by 8.8%.

Global spending

It is noteworthy that global military spending in the year 2024 has witnessed its largest increase since the end of the Cold War, to reach 2.7 trillion dollars, as a result of wars and conflicts around the world, according to the Stockholm Institute.

The spending increased by 9.4% in 2024 – the tenth consecutive year of the increase – compared to 2023.

“This clearly reflects intense geopolitical tensions. It is unprecedented. It is the biggest increase since the end of the Cold War,” said Xiao Liang, a researcher on the “Military Expenditure and Weapons Production Program” at the institute.

The report indicated that more than 100 countries increased their defense budgets last year.
