(Houston) Ten people were charged with attempted murder after the attack last week of a detention center for migrants in Texas, the United States Department of Justice said on Tuesday.
A police officer was injured in the neck during an attack on Friday evening against an immigration police center (ICE) located in Alvarado, Texas, in the south of the United States, the department said in a statement.
“Make no mistake, it was in no way a peaceful demonstration,” said Nancy Larson, a prosecutor. “It was an ambush tense to local and federal police.”
The attackers, all dressed in black, are accused of having drawn fireworks on the installations of the ICE and of having tagged, among other things, the word “trace” (traitor) on cars and the building.
An alleged striker pulled, from the neighboring woods, on a police officer arriving at the scene. Another attacker pulled 20 to 30 bullets on unarmed prison agents, said the Department of Justice.
Rifles have been found on the scene, as well as bulletproof vests and walkies-highs.
From leaflets to slogans such as “fighting terror that Ice reign by the class struggle” or “release all political prisoners” have also been found near the attacked site.
The ten people arrested were charged with three leaders of attempted murder against federal agents and three other chiefs concerning the use of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence.
They risk a minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum perpetuity prison sentence.
“Violence, threats of violence and attempted vandalism against our facilities will not dissuade our agents from fulfilling their functions,” said Josh Johnson, director of the local immigration police office.
On Monday, a man was killed after opening fire in the assault rifle on a border police building in Texas also, injuring two police officers and an employees, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
President Donald Trump erected the fight against illegal immigration in absolute priority, evoking an “invasion” of the United States by “criminals from abroad” and communicating abundantly on the expulsions of immigrants.
