One person died and 13 others were injured Friday afternoon when a man stole an 18-wheeler truck and used it to drive into a Texas Department of Public Safety building in Brenham, about a hundred kilometers from Houston.
Clenard Parker, 42, allegedly acted in this way out of revenge. The day before, the man had been refused a commercial driving license at the scene of the tragedy, authorities said at a press briefing.
Evoking a tragedy, the mayor of Bernham, Atwood Kenjura, however revealed that the tragedy could have been much more terrible since the suspect had started to back away with the idea of rushing into the building again, before being arrested.
“Our fire chief mentioned that if he had veered a little to the left the second time, the building would have completely collapsed, which would have resulted in many more injuries and possibly deaths.”
Among the 13 people injured, two suffered serious injuries, three were taken to the hospital but have since been released and eight were treated on scene by paramedics, Texas Public Safety said.
The one-day truck driver has been arrested and will face a slew of charges.
