(Houston) Floods caused the death of several inhabitants in Texas, in the south of the United States, local authorities announced on Friday, who also mentioned missing, including children.
The assessment of the sudden rise in waters is still uncertain, said at a press conference Rob Kelly, the head of the local authorities of Kerr, located in the center of Texas.
“We are trying to identify people,” he said, evoking “very devastating and murderous” floods that have ravaged the area due to heavy rains.
Regarding children who participated in a summer camp in the county, “we know that there are some who are missing. But how much (…) We are not sure of the number, “he added.
Rob Kelly highlighted the sudden nature of these floods in this region, however used to this type of phenomena.
“We have floods all the time. It is the most dangerous river valley in the United States, “he said, in reference to the Guadalupe river which crosses the area, but” we had no reason to believe that it was going to be something like what happened here “.
According to the American ocean and atmospheric observation agency (NOAA), the level of the Guadalupe river rose overnight, from 2 meters to more than 9 meters, after precipitation.
The weather services have issued a flood alert for the County Center-South Center, calling on the inhabitants to avoid travel and those residing near the Guadalupe river to go “to higher areas”.
In mid-June, at least ten people had perished due to floods in San Antonio, in southern Texas, following torrential rains.
