This exchange comes at a very tense moment between the two countries, with Washington exerting significant pressure on Caracas since September by means of a significant military presence – including its last aircraft carrier – in the southern Caribbean.
If the American government claims to be fighting drug cartels, that of Nicolas Maduro sees it as a desire to overthrow it.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request from AFP about the information from the American daily, which cites anonymous sources.
Since September, American forces have targeted more than 20 ships suspected of drug trafficking in the Caribbean Sea and the Eastern Pacific, killing at least 83 people in what could be described as “extrajudicial executions” according to the UN.
On Thursday, Donald Trump said his forces would very soon begin targeting “Venezuelan drug traffickers” in ground operations.
