“If Minnesota’s corrupt politicians do not respect the law and do not work to prevent professional agitators and insurgents from attacking” immigration police agents, one of whom killed a woman a week ago, provoking demonstrations, “I will invoke the INSURRECTION ACT,” declared the American president on his Truth Social network, the day after a new shooting by a federal agent in Minneapolis.

L’Insurrection Actcompilation of laws from the 18th centurye and XIXe centuries, is a form of state of emergency which allows the federal state to use the army for the purposes of maintaining order on American territory. It was last invoked in 1992 in California during the riots over the death of Rodney King.

A US federal immigration enforcement (ICE) agent shot a Venezuelan man in the leg on Wednesday in Minneapolis, city authorities said, urging people to “remain calm” a week after a woman from the same city, Renee Good, was shot dead there.

The facts occurred during an altercation in the evening in front of a residence in the north of the main city of Minnesota.

“During the altercation, the federal agent fired his weapon, striking an adult male,” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said at a press conference.

The man was injured in the leg and taken to hospital, but his life is not in danger, according to authorities.

This is the second time in a week that an ICE agent has been involved in a serious incident in Minneapolis.

On January 7, a 37-year-old American woman, Renee Nicole Good, was shot dead in her car while she took part in an action to hinder an operation by federal agents, sent in numbers to the city to carry out series of arrests.

The case sparked protests across the country, to which the US government responded by announcing on Sunday that it would send “hundreds” of additional federal agents to Minneapolis.

“We understand there is anger,” city officials wrote on the social network

The incident sparked a demonstration during which fireworks were fired at officers, the police chief told reporters.

According to the local newspaper Minnesota Star Tribunea few hundred people faced the police for several hours, who notably used stun grenades to disperse them.

Department of Homeland Security officials confirmed the shooting, saying “an illegal alien from Venezuela” resisted arrest after a traffic stop.

“While the suspect and the law enforcement officer were fighting on the ground, two individuals came out of a neighboring apartment and also attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and a broomstick,” the ministry explained.

The police officer then “fired a defensive shot to protect his life”, hitting the man in the leg, according to the institution.

Elected officials in Minneapolis and the state of Minnesota denounced the actions of Department of Homeland Security agents, including those from ICE.
