The Finance and Foreign Ministry ministers and the Central Bank of Syria governor intend to attend the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to be held in Washington later this month, Reuters news agency quoted four sources.
This will be the first participation of a high -ranking Syrian delegation in the meetings in about two decades, as well as the first high -level visit to the new Syrian authorities to the United States since the overthrow of ousted President Bashar al -Assad on December 8.
Two sources told Reuters that it was not yet clear whether Foreign Minister Asaad Al -Shaibani, Minister of Finance Muhammad Yusr Burniyah and the ruler of the Central Bank of Syria Abdel Qader Al -Qadr had obtained entry visas to the United States.
Speakers of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Syrian Foreign Ministry and the Syrian Presidency have yet to respond to Reuters requests for comment.
The other two sources said that a high -level summit meeting focuses on reconstruction efforts in Syria may be held on the sidelines of the summit.
The destruction of Syria has spread due to about 14 years of war that broke out due to a protest campaign against Assad, as a large part of the country’s infrastructure is still destroyed.
The new government, which took over after the overthrow of Assad, is seeking to rebuild Syria’s relations at the regional and international levels, and to obtain support for reconstruction.
But the strict American sanctions imposed during Assad’s rule are still valid. Last January, the United States granted a six -month exemption from some sanctions to encourage humanitarian aid,
But its effect was limited.
Last month, the United States provided Syria a list of conditions that must be fulfilled in exchange for a partial reduction in the sanctions, but it did not communicate significantly with the country’s new rulers.
This is due to the reasons for the different views of Washington on how to deal with new Syria.
