(Washington) long considered one of the pillars of American conservative ideology, the support of the United States in Israel is now questioned within Donald Trump’s “Maga” movement. To the point of influencing the American president?

“There is nothing more truthful and easy to say that on October 7 in Israel was horrible, and that all the hostages must be returned, but this is also the case for the genocide, the humanitarian crisis, and the hunger taking place in Gaza. »»

With these declarations on her X account, the very Trumpist Marjorie Taylor Greene became the first elected republican in the congress to use the term “genocide” to describe the actions carried out by Israel in the Palestinian territory.

The elected representative of Georgia (South) has long proclaimed the policy of “America first” advocated by Donald Trump, to insulation insulation.

The elected Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene

In mid-July, she had issued a bill aimed at cutting in particular $ 500 million in American funding for the anti-aircraft defense system in Israel.

“Israel is a country with nuclear weapons, well capable of defending itself,” she said.

Since the creation of the State of Israel, the support provided by Washington has been generally consensus on both sides of the Congress Hemicycle, but particularly on the right. A position which is partly explained by the influence of certain evangelical Christian movements which see in the Hebrew state an accomplishment of biblical prophecies.

“Hungry”

During his first mandate, Donald Trump himself displayed himself as a fervent defender of the privileged relationship of the United States with Israel, and had notably decided to move the American Embassy of Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a long-standing claim of the Israeli government.

And if the republican billionaire continued on his momentum when he returned to power in January, he now seems to show first signs of annoyance with the way in which Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu waged war in Gaza.

Donald Trump moved on Monday that “many people are hungry” in the Palestinian territory.

Asked to find out if he agreed with Benyamin Netanyahu who denied the existence of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the American president replied: “From what is shown on television, I would say no, not particularly, because these children seem to be very hungry. »»

His vice-president, JD Vance, went even further during an event in Ohio on the same day, lamenting with “heartbreaking” images of “small children who die of hunger”, and calling on the Israeli government to do more to let humanitarian aid enter Gaza.

Generational schism

Beyond the highest spheres of the State, it is heavy goods vehicles of the American hard right who no longer hesitate today to call for a break with Israel.

Like Tucker Carlson, the former star presenter of the Fox News chain who had strongly criticized Israeli strikes in Iran in June, urging the United States to get involved.

The very influential circle of conservative reflection Heritage Foundation had already considered in March that the United States should “redirect its relationship with Israel” to an “equal strategic partnership”.

A Gallup survey published on Tuesday seems to show that support for Israel remains predominant among republican sympathizers as a whole, since 71 % of them say they approve of Israeli military operations in Gaza, against only 8 % of democrats.

Another investigation carried out at the end of March by the Pew Research Center, however, pointed out towards a generational schism on the issue.

Among the republican sympathizers interviewed, 50 % of the 18 to 49 year olds said they had an unfavorable opinion of Israel, while the figure was only 23 % among republican sympathizers aged 50 and over.

“It seems that among the under 30s of the Maga database, Israel has almost no support,” the far -right ideologist Steve Bannon told the politico media. Donald Trump’s ex-advisor also said in June that Israel was not “an ally of the United States”.

It remains to be seen whether the position of the American president himself will really evolve in the coming weeks or next months.
