(New York) Strong rains have swept some regions in the northeast of the United States on Monday evening, flooding areas of New York State and the New Jersey of sudden floods that immobilized vehicles, closed metro lines and leads to the state of emergency declaration.
Sudden flood alerts were in force in some parts of New Jersey, New York State, Pennsylvania and the surrounding area, while torrential rains fell on the region.
New Jersey Governor, Phil Murphy, said the state of emergency due to sudden floods and heavy rains, advising the population to stay at home and avoid unnecessary trips.
A video published on social media by CBS shows flood waters paralyzing an important road to Scotch Plains, New Jersey, immobilizing buses.
Some New Jersey buses and trains have also been delayed due to the floods.
In New York, the metro service has been suspended, while other lines have undergone significant delays due to the floods, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
New York emergency services said on the social platform X that city areas were affected by sudden floods.
A video published on social media seems to show water to infiltrate a MANHATTAN metro station, overwhelming the quay, under the eyes of the passengers of a train. Another photo seems to show passengers standing on the seats of a train to prevent the water from infiltrating the ground.
Portions of major New York roads, such as the northern tracks of the Saw Mill River Parkway and the Cross Bronx Expressway, were temporarily closed due to the floods and the fall of at least one tree.
The authorities of the County of Westchester, in New York State, tried to rescue the people whose vehicles were overwhelmed, according to Carolyn Fortino, spokesperson for the county.
“At present, residents are always strongly advised to avoid any movement, except to flee a flood zone or in the event of an evacuation order,” she said in an email.
An flood alert was also issued for Staten Island, where precipitation reached between 10.2 and 15.2 centimeters, depending on the city of New York’s emergency notification system.
In Methen, in New Jersey, mayor Jonathan Mr. Busch said on Facebook that the borough was strongly flooded, but that the water level had already dropped on Monday evening.
“It seems that the worst of the storm is behind us and, fortunately, everyone is healthy,” he said.
