Police officers in Orville, California were in for quite a surprise when a vehicle they were pursuing finally stopped and a 9-year-old child was behind the wheel.

A police officer saw the vehicle come to a complete stop in the middle of an intersection, which led to a very short police chase, reports CNN.

The car eventually came to a stop near a gas station after crossing a parking lot.

“I’m sorry, I was on my way to school,” the child would have justified himself after being arrested by the peace officers.

“We were in a state of shock,” shares police officer Terry Dunn. It’s one of those situations where my colleagues and I were there and no one really believed it. We identified the school the child was headed to and we were able to contact his parents.”

Fortunately, no one got hurt.

“With a little luck, people will take this situation as an example and learn,” continues the police officer. Parents should explain to their children the dangers of driving and keep keys out of their reach.”

The child was able to get to school safely following the incident.
