The Wall Street Journal quoted unnamed informed sources as saying that the major British oil company, Shell, suspended all its shipments through the Red Sea indefinitely after American and British strikes on targets of the Ansar Allah group (Houthis) in Yemen raised fears of more attacks. escalation.

The attacks carried out by the Houthi group targeting Israeli ships passing through the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Red Sea in support of the Gaza Strip, which has been subjected to continuous Israeli aggression since the seventh of last October, disrupted global trade and raised the cost of shipping.

The newspaper added that the company took a step last week to stop all tankers due to fears that any successful attack could lead to a massive leak in the region, as well as risks threatening the safety of ship crews.

According to the newspaper, Shell declined to comment.

Last month, its competitor, British Petroleum, said it had temporarily suspended all transportation operations through the Red Sea.

At the beginning of this month, the giant shipping company Maersk said that it would divert its ships around the African continent instead of using the Red Sea and the Suez Canal in the foreseeable future.

About 12% of global trade usually passes through Bab al-Mandab between southern Yemen and Djibouti.
