A tow truck operator is under investigation in San Antonio, Texas, for towing a vehicle Monday morning while a 5-year-old girl was inside.
The child’s mother went outside her residence to warn the tow truck driver, but it was too late and she saw his car leave her driveway, CNN reports.
The whole thing would have happened in about five minutes.
A passerby, Gilbert Ramirez, witnessed the scene and alerted the authorities to the situation.
The car was eventually found a few minutes later in a towing yard a few miles away and the girl was able to get out of the vehicle.
Safe and sound, she was able to find her mother a few minutes later.
“She was crying, she was screaming,” Ramirez said. “I pulled over to the side of the road and called the police and the fire department.”
An investigation by the San Antonio Police Department has been opened as it is illegal in the United States to tow a car with a person inside.
In a statement, Trinity Towing said the car was on its lot for “a few minutes” before employees learned the child was inside.
“Even if the driver followed protocol, the situation could have been much worse,” they added.
The tow truck operator could face charges of endangering the life of a child.
