This week, in Weird patient, the case of a 35-year-old woman who presented to the emergency room with worrying symptoms. In question: mysterious pancakes found on the plane where she worked and ingested…
This cleaning employee certainly did not expect that when eating appetizing pancakes found in the toilets of the plane where she worked: suffering from violent dizziness, headaches, stomach aches and double vision, she is urgently admitted to hospital. In addition to these symptoms, she also has mild hypotension, excessive drowsiness, psychomotor slowing, tremors, and bilateral asymmetry – one side of her body reacts differently than the other.
The results of the examinations are clear: she is positive for THC, the main psychoactive compound present in cannabis. And that’s not all: two of his colleagues also let themselves be tempted and tasted the famous pancakes, before showing the same symptoms!
If the patient, aged 35, escaped without brain damage, the intensity of her reaction pushed doctors to publish an article, in which they warn of the dangerousness of THC when ingested rather than inhaled, because a very low dose is enough to cause worrying symptoms, which however take a little longer to appear and can last several hours.
THC-based edibles on the rise
“Signs of severe intoxication can also include vegetative and psychological crises (slowing down, derealization, anxious states)”, warn the authors. Augmented signs in this context, since it is a ingestioningestion unintentional, and that the patient was clearly not prepared for such effects.
If the preparation of food products and other “space cakes” containing psychotropic drugspsychotropic drugs is nothing new, its trade is however increasing in concert with the number of countries which legalize the consumption of cannabis. A market that is flourishing in airports and planes, where toilets have become a place where we consume as we get rid of substances. Behaviors that threaten the health of airport employees, who are particularly exposed and more likely to present serious symptoms in the event ofinhalationinhalation involuntary.
Fortunately, the products concerned are recognizable: “A bittersweet and intense taste could indicate a high concentration of cannabinoids in a consumed treat, or even, in the case of illegal trade, of cannabinoidscannabinoids increasingly widespread, more powerful and with increased adverse effects”details the article.
