Senegalese Minister of Justice Othman Diani said that the government decided to open judicial investigations into financial crimes that occurred between 2019 and 2024, which is the same period during which former President Makie Salil took the country in his second term that witnessed many events and tensions.

The announcement of the government comes to open judicial investigations after the issuance of the Audit Bureau report, which revealed financial imbalances, and in which the debt lists of debt owed to the country.

The Senegalese Accounting Bureau report indicated to counter the reports that were submitted to partners and donors regarding the financial situation of the state, and added that about 153 million dollars of tax revenues annually do not reach the treasury of the Senegal government due to fraud.

The Minister of Justice emphasized that this imbalance may constitute the crimes of embezzlement of public funds, money laundering and illegal enrichment.

Prime Minister Othman Sonko said that the previous regime had seen what he called “the policy of borrowing without controls, and forgery of numbers”, announcing at the same time that all those involved in forgery and dumping the country in financial problems are held accountable.

Supporters of former President Makki accuse the current government of being an open plot against its political opponents and distorting their image in front of the national opinion.

The opposition says that the aim of the investigations is to cover the authorities to fail and their inability to achieve the reforms and promises that Senegalese voters made.

The former Youth Minister, Bab Malik Andor, accused the current Prime Minister of fabricating the excuses for not facing the responsibilities entrusted to him in addressing the economic and social problems of citizens.

The Senegalese press expected that the government in the coming days would hold arrests and trials that affect a number of ministers and senior officials during the era of the Maki Salim regime.

The investigations announced by the Minister of Justice coincided with the formation of a new opposition front aimed at opposing the ruling Pastiv Party and its leader Othman Sonko.
