Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said on Monday that his country intends to achieve financial profits from all minerals, including uranium.
He added during a conference in the city of Dhahran (east of the country) that Saudi Arabia will enrich uranium, sell it, and produce what is known as yellow cake, in reference to a concentrated powder of uranium free of impurities used in making
Uranium fuel for nuclear reactors.
Saudi Arabia is currently running an emerging nuclear program that it is working to expand, and the Saudi Energy Minister’s statement regarding uranium enrichment and yellowcake production reflects new steps towards developing the nuclear energy sector in the Kingdom. This comes within the framework of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which aims to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on oil.
Yellowcake is a compound of raw uranium used as an intermediate step before enrichment.
Uranium enrichment is the process of increasing the proportion of uranium isotope used in nuclear reactors and energy applications.
Saudi Arabia is working to develop nuclear reactors for peaceful purposes, such as generating electricity and water desalination, and supporting industries related to nuclear energy as part of Vision 2030.
