Independent candidate for the White House Robert Kennedy Jr complained to the body responsible for the smooth running of the campaign about being excluded from the televised debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, his campaign team said on Wednesday.

The nephew of the assassinated president “JFK” accuses the CNN channel, which is to broadcast a first face-to-face between Biden and Trump on June 27, of having excluded him from the debate.

His lawyers filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday saying Joe Biden’s team had openly demanded that he not attend and noting that US media had reported that Donald Trump had “received the CNN’s assurance that Mr. Kennedy would be excluded.

Also at the heart of the complaint: the obligation given by the channel, to participate in the debate, to appear on the ballots of a sufficient number of states by June 20.

However, this environmental law lawyer, rejected by a large part of the Kennedy clan, is only registered in seven states at the moment.

“RFK Jr” has almost no chance of victory in November, with just over 10% of voting intentions in the polls. But both Democrats and Republicans are concerned about its impact in key states, where it could swing the votes of the undecided to one side or the other.
