Today, Wednesday, King of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, inaugurated the Riyadh Metro Project, which is the backbone of the “Riyadh Public Transport Network” and one of the elements of the transportation system in the Saudi capital.
The project is the largest metro in the world to be built at one time, and the first phase of the “Riyadh Metro” was opened today across 3 out of 6 tracks, with the rest of the tracks to be launched in the coming weeks.
The total length of the Riyadh Metro network is 176 kilometers, and includes 84 stations, covering most densely populated areas, government facilities, commercial, educational and health activities, and is linked to King Khalid International Airport, King Abdullah Financial Center, major universities, the city center and the public transportation center.
The Royal Commission for the City of Riyadh said that the Riyadh Metro, which cost $22.5 billion to build, aims to reduce the excessive use of private vehicles, strengthen the local economy, preserve the environment, and improve the quality of life for Riyadh residents by providing an advanced and fast means of transportation, noting that the Riyadh Metro will contribute to facilitating traffic and connecting… Different areas in the capital.
New transportation strategy
Train and bus transportation services are integrated within a giant network with an estimated capacity of 1.7 million passengers per day during the initial operating phase, as the network was developed to connect major locations and destinations in the capital, such as the headquarters of ministries, universities, hospitals, commercial complexes, transportation centers, and government facilities.
The Riyadh Metro consists of 6 tracks that roam the capital, especially places with high population density, which are:
- The first track (blue line) is the Olaya-Bathaa-Al-Ha’ir axis, with a length of 38 km.
- The second track (red line) is King Abdullah Road, with a length of 25.3 km.
- The third track (orange line) is the axis of Medina Road – Prince Saad bin Abdul Rahman I Road, with a length of 40.7 km.
- The fourth track (yellow line) is the axis of King Khalid International Airport Road, with a length of 29.6 km.
- The fifth track (Green Line) is the axis of King Abdulaziz Road, with a length of 12.9 km.
- The sixth track (purple line) is the axis of Abdul Rahman bin Auf Road – Sheikh Hassan bin Hussein bin Ali Road, with a length of 30 km.

Multiple services
All stations are air-conditioned and equipped with Internet service and trip information systems, while some stations will include shops and parking lots. The Riyadh Metro includes 4 main stations located at the intersection of the train tracks, which are “Qasr Al-Hukm Area Station, King Abdullah Financial Center Station, and the Western Station.” And the “STC” station.
The metro’s capacity is 1.16 million passengers per day, and it is expected that the trains, which reach speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, will contribute to reducing dependence on private cars by two million trips per day.
