Qatar Energy CEO Saad Al-Kaabi announced at a press conference on Sunday that the state-owned company will boost its urea production to more than 12.4 million tons annually from the current 6 million tons.

During a press conference held in Doha, Al Kaabi explained that the plan is to establish four new production lines for urea (a key component in fertilizers), which will boost production by 106%. He added that the first lines will start operating before 2030.

“When we look at the urea market in the future, with the current population growth that will increase by between 1.5 billion and 2 billion people in the next 20 to 30 years, the need for urea in food production will increase significantly,” added Al Kaabi, who also serves as Minister of State for Energy Affairs.

In his speech, Al Kaabi explained that developing the project in Mesaieed Industrial City (south of the country) will ensure optimal utilization of the advanced infrastructure currently available for petrochemical and fertilizer industries, including the export port, which is considered one of the largest fertilizer and chemical export ports in the Middle East and North Africa region, and for Mesaieed to become the urea production capital of the world.

He added that today’s announcement is a continuation of our efforts and an embodiment of our commitment to supplying the world with the energy products its people need to achieve continuous economic growth and to support energy and food security for the world’s peoples while achieving a balance between the growing needs of humanity and the sound management of the country’s natural resources.

Energy projects

Regarding gas production development projects, Al Kaabi pointed out that work on the North Field gas production expansion project is progressing according to schedule.

This massive expansion will boost Qatar’s total LNG production by 85% compared to current levels.

The North Field is part of the world’s largest natural gas field, which Qatar shares with Iran, which calls it South Pars.

During the conference, Al Kaabi also announced the construction of a third new solar power plant in the Dukhan area, with the aim of more than doubling the country’s total solar energy production to 4,000 megawatts by 2030.
