Qatar Energy Company signed an agreement with Total Energies, under which it acquired 50% of the solar energy project of the integrated gas growth project in Iraq.
Under the agreement, which is subject to the approval of the relevant authorities, Total Energies will retain the remaining 50% of the project.
The project, which will be one of the largest in the world, is scheduled to include two million highly efficient bifacial solar panels mounted on single-axis trackers to be able, when completed, to provide up to 1.25 gigawatts (at peak) of electricity generated from Solar energy for the electricity network in Basra, according to a company statement.
Development stages
The project will be developed in phases between 2025 and 2027, and will be able to supply electricity to about 350,000 homes in the Basra region.
The Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Managing Director and CEO of Qatar Energy, Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, said: “I am pleased that we have concluded this agreement to partner in a project that is very important for the Iraqi energy sector, and we look forward to working with our strategic partner, Total Energies, to make it a success.”
In June 2023, Qatar Energy announced its joining of an alliance that will implement the integrated gas growth project in Iraq, with it owning a 25% stake, along with Total Energies 45% and Basra Oil Company (30%).
The integrated gas growth project includes designing and constructing facilities to develop Iraq’s natural resources, in addition to recovering large quantities of gas in the Basra region and supplying it to power generation plants instead of burning it.
