California Gov. Gavin Newsom, President Donald Trump’s leading Democratic opponent, said he plans to run for the White House in 2028, after next year’s midterm elections.

Asked on “CBS Sunday Morning” whether he was seriously thinking about campaigning after the November 2026 election, the term-limited governor said that “to say otherwise would be a lie.”

Gavin Newsom is working to increase his national profile, adopting a combative style that parodies Donald Trump’s social media strategy with all-caps statements, memes and similar merchandise.

The Democratic governor argued with the Republican president over the deployment of the California National Guard and Republican redistricting in Texas. The California governor also led a campaign to redraw California’s map to add five Democratic seats to the U.S. House of Representatives, in response to changes in Texas. Voting on this proposal is underway and will end on November 4.

“I can’t wait to see who comes forward in 2028 and who can take on this challenge. This is the question that the American people are asking themselves,” he said in an interview broadcast on Sunday.

The friction between MM. Trump and Newsom do not seem ready to calm down. In the interview, Mr. Newsom called Mr. Trump an “invasive species.”

“It’s like a wrecking ball,” he argued, referring to the demolition of the East Wing of the White House to build a ballroom. “It destroys alliances, truth, trust, tradition and institutions. » Earlier this year, the governor launched a podcast to position himself as a centrist.

During the show, he spoke with influential figures from across the political spectrum, from conservative Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated while visiting a college campus, to former Mr. Trump strategist Steve Bannon, to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, former Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 running mate, and U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, Democrat of Texas.
