A cargo plane crashed Tuesday in Alaska with two people on board, who are probably dead, American authorities announced.
The crash took place around 10 a.m. (6 p.m. GMT) near the airport in Fairbanks, a city in the center of this state located in the far northwest of the American continent, Alaska police said. in a press release.
The aircraft had “two people on board” and crashed “on the Tanana River”, less than ten minutes after taking off.
“The plane fell onto a steep hill on the river bank where it caught fire. No survivors have been found,” police said.
A photo of the crash provided by authorities shows burning trees on the edge of an ice-covered river, amid which the remains of the plane are barely perceptible.
The aircraft was a Douglas DC-4. Created during the Second World War, this model has not been produced for more than thirty years and is now mainly used for freight transport.
The plane was on a flight to transport fuel, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed.
The NTSB and the American Civil Aviation Regulatory Agency (FAA) will investigate, the latter confirmed in a press release.
