The owner of a dog abandoned during Hurricane Milton that hit Florida will be prosecuted for animal cruelty, Governor Ron DeSantis said.
The canine, a white bull terrier, who found a foster home with an animal protection association, was found tied to a fence with water up to his stomach on the side of a road in Tampa, according to what the “New York Post” reported.
The scene of the dog in distress sparked widespread outrage, to the point where the authorities had to intervene to file a complaint against the owner of the pet who faces up to five years in prison.
“You can’t just tie up a dog and leave it outside to weather a storm. This is completely unacceptable and we are going to hold you accountable,” DeSantis said at a press conference Tuesday.
The complaint file will be investigated by the Hillsborough County prosecutor, while the dog renamed Trooper was taken in by the SPA Leon Humane Society in Tallahassee, while waiting to analyze adoption requests, according to the New York tabloid.
