An ostrich that escaped from a zoo in Kansas, United States, did not survive after swallowing keys stolen from an employee.
“We are devastated by the loss of Karen,” Topeka Zoo interim director Fawn Moser told the New York Post, recalling that the animal that left its enclosure grabbed the keys to a zoo employee before swallowing them.
The intervention of caregivers and other specialists could do nothing to save the bird whose complications from ingesting the keys cost him his life, continued the American media.
“Karen, a dynamic and beloved ostrich, tragically succumbed to complications related to the consumption of a foreign object,” lamented the establishment in a press release.
“It was not just an animal, but one of the team members,” explained Mr. Moser, adding that visitors and zoo staff had formed a deep bond with the ostrich who quickly acclimated. to its new environment since 2023.
An investigation was opened into this incident by the management of the Topeka Zoo, which has strengthened security to prevent this type of drama from happening again in the future, according to the “New York Post”.
