The man was arrested shortly after midnight by Secret Service agents assigned to Mr. Vance’s residence, located east of downtown Cincinnati, agency spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in an email. The suspect’s name has not been released.
Secret Service agents heard a loud noise coming from the house around midnight, according to two law enforcement officials who were not authorized to publicly discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Officers found a person who had broken a window with a hammer and was attempting to enter the home. The man also allegedly vandalized a Secret Service vehicle while driving up the driveway of the home, according to one of the officials.
The house, located in the Walnut Hills neighborhood, in the hills overlooking the city, was unoccupied at the time of the incident. Mr. Vance and his family were not in Ohio, Mr. Guglielmi confirmed.
The Secret Service is coordinating its efforts with Cincinnati police and the U.S. attorney’s office, he noted.
Mr. Vance, a Republican, was a senator representing Ohio before becoming vice president.
