(New York) Like many Republicans, Donald Trump has made aroused the unexpected success of Zohran Mamdani during the Democratic primary for the election at New York town hall.

Posted at 5:00 a.m.

“We have already had left-wing radicals, but there, it becomes a bit ridiculous,” he wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday after qualifying the 33-year-old socialist democratic candidate as “100 % communist madman”.

The irony wants the success of Zohran Mamdani, a member of the New York State assembly, is largely based on Donald Trump’s electoral recipe. And the replicas of the political earthquake he caused Tuesday by surprising the ex-New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, favorite in the polls and with the Democratic elites, could be felt far beyond New York, including in the districts and key states of the mid-term elections.

But first, a brief step back: last November, Zohran Mamdani reacted to the results of the presidential election by going to the immigration districts in New York where Donald Trump had produced major gains compared to 2020.

Micro in hand, he questioned many voters about the reasons which had pushed them to turn his back on the Democratic Party and to vote for the Republican candidate. His approach did not only produce one of those videos which allowed him to ignite social networks and attract young people towards him.

She also inspired the theme of her campaign at the town hall: the “crisis” of the cost of living.

Result: Zohran Mamdani, born in Uganda of Indian parents, can today boast of sharing with Donald Trump voters.

A Trump’s theme and donation

“I think there are many,” he said on Wednesday during a radio interview. “I myself met some of them. In the end, it’s about listening to New Yorkers rather than giving them the lesson. Because when I had these conversations, only a few days after the presidential election, which I have heard many times as a determining of the vote was the impossibility of dealing with the increase in the cost of living in this city. »»

Zohran Mamdani has not only borrowed from Donald Trump one of the major themes of his last presidential campaign. He also made his gift of translating into lapidary and memorable formulas his main electoral promises: “Personal gel”; “Free and fast bus”; “Universal daycares”; “Supermarkets managed by the city”.

Where the New York town hall candidate promises to deviate from Donald Trump is in the realization of his promises.

However, if they have attracted voters, these same promises are part of the reasons which explain the reluctance or the refusal of elected democrats to support it.

The New York Kathy Hochul State Democratic Governor has notably expressed himself against the tax increases that Zohran Mamdani offers to finance her ambitious program. Increases that would require the approval of the Capitol of New York State and the signing of the governor.

“I will not increase taxes at a time when affordability is a major problem,” she said during a television interview last weekend. “I don’t want to lose other people for the benefit of Palm Beach. We have lost enough. »»

Accusations of anti -Semitism

The financing of the promises of Zohran Mamdani is not the only issue to create discomfort among the Democrats. His criticisms of Israel, whom he accuses of committing a genocide in the Gaza Strip, divide the party of Bill Clinton and Michael Bloomberg, two centrists who preferred Andrew Cuomo to him.

And if Jewish elected officials from New York support him, Zohran Mamdani continues to be charged with anti -Semitism, in particular due to his recent statements aimed at justifying calls to “globalize intifada”.

“The day before yesterday, I had serious concerns about MEP Mamdani, and this is one of the reasons why I supported his opponent. These concerns remain, “wrote the Democratic representative of New York Tom Suozzi on Wednesday on X on X on Wednesday, whose constituency includes parts of the district of Queens and two counties of Long Island.

Obviously, Tom Suozzi does not want to be identified with the most controversial ideas of Zohran Mamdani, ideas that are likely to displease his electorate, one of the richest in the United States.

However, the Republicans will not deprive themselves of associating this representative and all the other Democratic candidates with that which the Republican representative of the State of New York Elise Stefanik described as a “communist” and a “enraged anti -Semitic”.

Other Republicans blackened this tendentious portrait by adding a touch of Islamophobia.

“24 years ago, a group of Muslims killed 2,753 people on September 11. Today, a Muslim socialist is on the way to directing the city of New York, ”wrote on X Charlie Kirk, an influential figure in the Maga movement.

A link with Obama

There are obviously Democrats to say that Zohran Mamdani is an example to follow and not a regrowth to be feared. Credited with 2 % of support in the polls at the start of the race, he survived millions of dollars in negative advertisements, mobilized tens of thousands of volunteers and humiliated the heir to a political dynasty.

His success recalled another.

“They badly say his name. They say he is inexperienced. It reminds me of a candidate who presented himself on the theme of change, “said the general prosecutor of the state of New York Letitia James, the day before the primary, establishing a link between Zohran Mamdani and Barack Obama.

But the game is far from over. As part of the general election, Zohran Mamdani will face, among other things, the outgoing mayor, Eric Adams, who will campaign as an independent, and the host of Radio Curtis Sliwa, winner of the Republican primary. To these candidates could be added Andrew Cuomo, who does not spread the possibility of presenting themselves under the banner of a third party.

Despite the pots he drags, the mayor Adams hopes to attract moderate voters towards him, as well as republican voters. He also covers the support of business people, fiercely opposed to the election of a socialist candidate.

As for the interested party, he quotes Pastor Martin Luther King Jr. to reassure voters.

“I often think back to the words of the DR King, “he said on Wednesday on the radio. “He said,” Call this democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth in this country for all the children of God. ” People feel it throughout the city, “he added.
