(Washington) Criticized in the polls and contested even within his own camp for his management of the economy, Donald Trump will “increase the pace” of his travels in the United States, a senior White House official said on Thursday.
Radical right-wing elected official Marjorie Taylor Greene recently accused the American president of spending too much time on diplomatic issues and trips abroad, at a time when discontent is gaining ground within households over the cost of living.
“Repairing the disaster caused by (former Democratic President) Joe Biden in terms of inflation and the economy has been a priority since day one” for the 79-year-old Republican, who returned to power on January 20, said Kush Desai, a White House spokesperson.
“The government has since put in place a robust program to lower the prices of basic products such as gasoline and eggs and to reduce inflation to an annualized rate of 2.5%,” he assured in a statement sent to AFP.
The Republican Party suffered bitter setbacks in recent local elections, considered a serious warning by certain voices in the MAGA movement created by the New York billionaire (Make America Great Again).
While opinion surveys point to a persistent and even growing concern among households about their purchasing power, Donald Trump defends himself by making new promises, by ensuring that the economy is more robust than the polls suggest and by damning the record of his predecessor.
“The country has never been better off,” he repeated again on Wednesday evening.
